Zap! is currently one of the more well known electric car makers. Currently, they offer low speed vehicles and scooters. They have partnered with Lotus to make an all electric SUV, the Zap-X. This SUV will be able to go up to 100 m.p.h. and have a 350 mile range before needing charging.
The newly announced sedan will be able to go 100 miles per charge and cost about $30,000. There aren't many details yet, but Zap! says it should come out before the end of 2008.

I dealth with Zap in the past, obtainging a few of their Zebra vehicles for a customer who planned to use them in "challenging" conditions. Zap assured me that the Zebras were capable of performing properly in these conditions...but after months of delays in obtaining the vehicles, they didn't work, and we returned them to Zap.
My point - I liken Zap to used car salesmen...hence the outrageous claim of a $30,000 100mi rangle sedan vehicle. Zap doesn't have any in-house technical talent - they obtain their vehicles from third party manufacturers - Zap doesn't contribute at all to the R&D of the vehicles.
Although I personally have not owned a Zap vehicle, I did request that my Domino's pizza be delivered in one (we can request that because we live in Las Vegas). The pizza arrived stone-cold and one hour late. When I inquired about the delay, which ruined my party, the driver said that the electric car had broken down in the middle of the highway.
I have serious doubts about the reliability of such electric cars, and don't plan to buy an electric car anytime soon, or at least until reputable car companies like Toyota start building them.
I don't think that Zap is such a good idea; my co-worker used to own one, and it had so many problems. He recently switched to a Prius, and he is much more satisfied.
